Course introduction

The current context showcases healthcare systems fragmentation, need for patient centricity, patient safety increase of patient digital skills, healthcare systems transformation, such as: (1) Shifting tasks and roles, (2) Relocation of care to other settings (3) Introduction of care coordination role, (4) Empowering patients and caregivers through new roles, (5) Introduction of dedicated prevention roles in primary care, (6) Establishment of teamwork and collaboration in multi- professional teams. 

For this reason, there is an acute need to increase collaboration (including but not limited to sharing knowledge, sharing documents) and communication between medical staff at difference competence levels and in different locations. In this context, tools like Microsoft Office and Google suite can enhance the use of standardized documents and formats. 

Therefore, the current training package empowers healthcare staff to use Microsoft Office and Google Suite with the main benefits: 

  • Improve healthcare workforce efficiency;  
  • Expand access to healthcare; 
  • Improving quality of healthcare; 
  • Improve patient-centeredness and efficiency; 
  • Improve care coordination; 
  • Enhance patient self-management; 
  • Enhancing health-promotion and education.

Learning outcomes

The objective of the present MOOC is: 

  • to increase the knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite packages among health and care workers; 
  • to empower healthcare workers to use these tools in their daily activities, through several modules with practical examples. 
Module 1
  • Competence:
    • Is able to independently form a comprehensive overview of the uses of Microsoft Forms / Google Forms.
  • Knowledge:
    • Knows the specific uses and functions of Microsoft Forms/Google Forms, and the main differences between the tools
    • Knows the benefits and disadvantages of each Microsoft/Google tool
  • Skills:
    • Uses the appropriate tool for the benefit of healthcare staff in situations such as:
      • Patient surveys and feedback
      • Patient registration to studies / appointments
Module 2
  • Competence:
    • Is able to independently form a comprehensive overview of the uses of Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets.
  • Knowledge:
    • Knows the specific uses and functions of Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets, and the main differences between the tools
    • Knows the benefits and disadvantages of each Microsoft/Google tool
  • Skills:
    • Uses the appropriate tool for the benefit of healthcare staff in situations such as:
      • Patient Data Management
      • Research, studies
Module 3
  • Competence:
    • Is able to independently form a comprehensive overview of the uses of Microsoft Word / Google Docs.

    • Is able to independently form a comprehensive overview of the uses of Microsoft PowerPoint / Google Slides
  • Knowledge:
    • Knows the specific uses and functions of Microsoft PowerPoint / Google Slides, and the main differences between the tools
    • Knows the benefits and disadvantages of each Microsoft/Google tool
  •  Skills:
    • Uses the appropriate tool for the benefit of healthcare staff in situations such as:
      • Medical case presentation
Module 5
  • Competence:
    • Is able to independently form a comprehensive overview of the uses of Microsoft One Drive / Google Drive
  • Knowledge:
    • Knows the specific uses and functions of Microsoft One Drive / Google Drive and the main differences between the tools
    • Understands the benefits of using these tools for interdisciplinary advice, review of documents by patient boards, remote collaboration between healthcare professionals
    • Knows the benefits and disadvantages of each Microsoft/Google tool
  • Skills:
    • Uses the appropriate tool for the benefit of healthcare staff in situations such as:
      • Sharing documents, knowledge
Module 6
  • Competence:
    • Is able to independently form a comprehensive overview of the uses of Microsoft Teams / Google Meet
  • Knowledge:
    • Knows the specific uses and functions of Microsoft Teams / Google Meet and the main differences between the tools
    • Knows the benefits and disadvantages of each Microsoft/Google tool
    • Understands the benefits of using these tools for interdisciplinary advice, patient boards without requiring physical presence; sharing knowledge from competence centres which are not available in the area where the patient lives, remote collaboration between healthcare professionals
  • Skills:
    • Uses the appropriate tool for the benefit of healthcare staff in situations such as:
