Course introduction
The aim of this course is to improve skill and competences of medical professionals in clinical digital data management. Today almost all clinical activities generate data stored in hospital computer systems. There is an important need, by these professionals, to better know how clinical data are stored and how it can be retrieved retrieved. This knowledge is fundamental to plan data extraction from memory storage, data analysis and knowledge generation that can be obtained from clinical data routinely generated and stored in clinical data storage systems. The aim of this module is to provide the instruments for understanding the most popular system for data storage and the related strategies to perform queries to access data clinical databases and to analyze clinical data. In the course examples on the use of database management systems is provided. This knowledge can directly or indirectly improve routine clinical work, since data analysis is the basis for taking decisions on a routine base. The knowledge on the management of clinical data may improve the clinical outcome and the efficacy of clinical activities, as well as reduce clinical costs.

After successfully completing this Course, the learner will be to

- Know what a relational database is
- Know which is the software most frequently used to store/extract clinical data
- Know how to install and use a database management software on a PC
After successfully completing this Course, the learner will be able to
- Visualize a data set or table of a relational data base
- Put in relation data from different table in a database
- Select data from a database
- Select data from different tables in a relational database
- Export data from a database to a spread sheet
- Analyse data extracted from a clinical database
