This course is designed to provide information on the regulatory frameworks, and incentives relevant for circular economy, and the alignment with sustainable development goals, also the identification of international cooperation skills to standardize circular economy practices and regulations.

The course highlights the cross-cutting role of circular economy policy and their links with other EU policies.

This course is ideal for agroindustry, farmers and environmental sciences students who want to implement circular economy in their activities or businesses.

Module 1 aims to provide students with a general overview of the main targets and instruments of the EU circular economy policy with special attention to those in the sector of agriculture and the food-water-nutrient value chain.

Module 2 aims to provide students with a general overview of the main EU incentives and funding instruments supporting circular economy, with special attention to those in the sector of agriculture and the food-water-nutrient value chain.

Module 3 aims to provide students with a general overview of the links and synergies between UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and circular economy.

Module 4 aims to provide students with concept, references and resources, related to the importance of development skills to understand and implement circular economy practices, and to create new jobs or adapt existing jobs and businesses to new circular economy principles and practices.

Through a combination of theoretical concepts and practical examples, participants will:

  • LO1 – Navigating policies at local, national and international levels. Embrace the vision of a future with comprehensive policies at local, national, and international levels that fully support the circular economy by incentivizing sustainable practices and discouraging wastefulness through regulations and taxes.
  • LO2- Gain insight into the complexities of aligning local policies with national and international sustainability goals, recognizing the challenges and importance of creating a conducive regulatory environment for circular economy practices
  • LO3 – Develop the ability to navigate the complex web of agricultural and environmental regulations, especially for startups aiming to innovate within the traditional farming sector using circular economy solutions
  • LO4 – Appreciate the importance of incentives in encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices, along with the need for flexibility to adapt policies as more is learned about effective circular economy practices.
  • LO5 – Understand the various incentives provided by governments to support the transition to a circular economy. This includes subsidies for sustainable farming practices, research and development grants for agricultural technologies, and regulations promoting organic farming and animal welfare.
  • LO6 – Acquire knowledge about the policy landscape and incentive structures that support the circular economy, enabling businesses and individuals to capitalize on subsidies or incentives for sustainable practices and comply with legislation aimed at reducing waste and promoting recycling.
  • LO7 – Skilfully navigate and leverage incentives designed to facilitate the transition to a circular economy in agriculture, by preparing and managing subsidy applications for sustainable farming practices, actively pursuing research and development grants for innovative agri-tech solutions. 
  • LO8 – Embrace the vision of a future with comprehensive policies at local, national, and international levels that fully support the circular economy by incentivizing sustainable practices and discouraging wastefulness through regulations and taxes.
  • LO9 – Gain insight into the complexities of aligning local policies with national and international sustainability goals, recognizing the challenges and importance of creating a conducive regulatory environment for circular economy practices.
  • LO10 – Stay informed about global sustainability goals and how they translate into local policies, helping to align business strategies with broader environmental objectives
